Banksia NSW 2216, Australia
The oldest fossil cones are between 47.8 and 41.2 million years old, found in Western Australia. Although Banksia is now only native to Australia and New Guinea, there are fossils from New Zealand, between 21 and 25 million years old.
Banksia produces elongated, cone-shaped spikes made of numerous small, sac-shaped flowers. Each spike is made of hundreds or thousands (up to 6.000) of flowers. Banksia produce creamy, yellow, orange, red, green, violet or brown flowers. Some species have multi-colored spikes.
Banksias range from low-growing shrubs to trees up to 25 m tall. Some species, for example Banksia ericifolia and Banksia menziesii , are known for their spectacular flower heads.Dec 24, 2015
